Name of Assignment: Frankenstein Empire Subject: Humanities Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Terry
Description of Work/Assignment: For this assignment, I was in a group of four. Each group member had to learn about an empire (Ottoman, Mughal, Russia, and China). After each group member learned about their empire, we taught the members in our group about that empire we learned about. After all that was done, we have to make our own empire and incorporate elements from the empires we learned about into the empire we’re making. Lastly, we were put into groups with different people and presented our empires to them.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? This assignment addresses the Global Awareness 21st century skill. Global awareness is “understanding the thinking, motivations, and actions of different cultures and countries in order to successfully navigate and respond to communities and workplaces extending beyond their neighborhoods”. In this project we had to really learn about and understand the empire we chose because we had to teach it to our other group members. I learned a lot about how emperors, government, or peasants thought. I also got to learn the different actions different emperors took when they had power.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? Something that I’m most proud of from this assignment was how we were able to have fun and get the work done as a group. Normally, I’m not a group work type of person but working with my group was fun and productive.I am also proud that I was able to teach my group members about the empire I learned about with fidgeting or stuttering. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot in this assignment.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? With this assignment, I feel like I developed my 21st century skill. I never really took the time to learn the actions of different cultures and countries. In this project we spent a lot of time learning about several places, cultures, and countries. We even got to learn about our classmates own empire that they made.
What was most difficult about completing this task? The most difficult thing about completing this task would be not even knowing what political structures, social hierarchy, and economy was. I had to search definitions and listen in class when the teacher gave a brief definition of them which helped a lot. It took some extra research for me to fully get the idea of economy but; in the end I was able to learn something new and get the work done.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different? I could improve on my presenting skills. If I could start over, I would do everything the same except for my presentation. I knew everything, all the facts and words but I just kept looking at the laptop screen instead of the audience. I would also like to speak up a little more during the presentation part of this project.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? I haven’t really touched base on empires before. In my earlier grades, the teacher would say something about it but never really went into detail. I would say that this was something really new for me to learn about.
How can you apply this to future learning? I can apply this to future learning when we go more in depth with empire for Humanities. But, for the whole assignment there is a lot that I could apply to future learning. For example, the presentation part of the assignment. I can see what I can improve on and apply it to future projects/presentations.
