Name of Assignment: Socratic Seminar Subject: Humanities 12th Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Terry
The assignment I’d like to talk about is the Socratic Seminar in Humanities 12th. In this socratic seminar, we were split into three groups. Each group would have about eight minutes to discuss a topic we learned about in class. After the eight minutes is over, we discuss another topic that doesn’t have to be school related for eight minutes as well. To get a good grade, you would have to be involved in the discussion well, listening to whoever is talking, talk about your opinions, etc. Basically, you have to be involved in the conversation/discussion. The 21st Century Skill this assignment addresses is Global Awareness. I think this because when I had to research a topic to talk about, I came across many different cultures, times, and countries. The topic I chose to talk about was the times of when Homo Sapiens first got to the Americas. I wanted to see what thoughts my classmates had on how Homo Sapiens (a long time ago) acted or how they came to be so smart. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to talk more than I did last year. I’m glad that I shared what I was thinking rather than just keeping it to myself. The most difficult thing about completing this task was finding a topic to talk about. I always overthink it and think that the topic I chose isn’t engaging enough. I spent a few hours just researching what to talk about. I could improve by maybe leading the conversation next time. I should try to at least start the conversation at first. Something that I would do differently is not be afraid to break the silence. Sometimes it would get quiet for a good amount of time and no one said anything, I should’ve said something to get a conversation going.
